These are the 7 mistakes that beginning vintage resellers make the most
Everyone starts somewhere — but some mistakes cost you profit, time, and motivation right away. As a vintage reseller, you want to grow, sell, and delight customers. But what if you accidentally use strategies that actually hold you back?
In this blog we reveal the 7 most common mistakes beginners make when reselling vintage clothing. And of course: how you can cleverly avoid them.
1. Buying too much without selection
It sounds logical: the more stock, the more you can sell. But the reality is different. Beginners often buy in bulk or by the kilo — and are left with clothes that are hard to sell.
What works better? Curated boxes of selected, sellable items. That way you know every piece is a contender, rather than 'maybe someday' sellable.
2. Bad or unclear product photos
No matter how beautiful your clothes are, if your photos are dark, blurry or cluttered, customers will simply scroll past them. Platforms like Vinted are visual. Photos can make or break your sale.
Tip: Use daylight, a neutral background, and show the item completely (front, back, details).
3. Unclear or sloppy descriptions
“Nice sweater size M.” That’s too vague. Mention brand, style, fit, condition, color, and unique features. And be honest about wear — that builds trust.
Example: “Vintage Nike hoodie, relaxed fit. Light gray with blue logo. Small stain on sleeve, otherwise in top condition.”
4. Pricing everything too low (for fear of no sales)
Many beginners underprice items out of insecurity. But that shows distrust and cuts your margin. Low price ≠ faster sales. Customers are looking for value, not just bargains.
Test it: Start with a firm, market-conform price. Only reduce over time, not immediately.
5. No consistency in uploads or drops
Algorithms like regular activity on your account. For example, if you upload everything at once and then don't post anything for weeks, your visibility will drop significantly and you will be less likely to be seen by potential buyers. To prevent this, it is best to add new items at regular intervals. Many successful resellers opt for fixed 'drops', such as posting five new items online every Monday. By uploading consistently and structurally, the algorithm will recognize your account as active and relevant. This not only increases your visibility, but can also ensure that you sell faster. Regularity is therefore the key to more success on the platform.
Bonus: Consistency also builds trust with returning customers.
6. Buying too broadly without a niche
Beginners often want 'something for everyone'. But you stand out with focus. Think: 90s sportswear, Y2K tops, oversized hoodies or branded sweaters. The clearer your niche, the stronger your brand.
Ask yourself: Would a follower immediately understand what you are selling? If not, it is time to focus.
7. Do not calculate profit per item or box
You only see the turnover — but what is really left after purchasing, shipping, platform costs? Beginners often forget this. But profit-conscious purchasing is the difference between hobby and business.
What helps? Curated boxes with clear margins. Like our Premium Sweater Box of €140 , with which customers generate an average turnover of €350. This way you know in advance what your margin can be.
